Tried, Tested, and Trusted: How We Select Every Product in Our Packs
Nutrition article
We have tried and tested the best items to go into our packs from our experience at races. The brands and items we have chosen are the ones we think offer the best run fuel.

Finding the right fuel for a race can seem an overwhelming and daunting task. One gel that might seem great but actually is too sweet after the fourth hour of eating.

I’ve landed on four core options Precision Fuel 30, SiS GO Isotonic, OTE Super Gel, and Clif Bloks. These are the easiest to eat and I have selected to use the most neutral flavours.

Precision Fuel 30 Gel

I selected Precision Fuel 30 as an option because they have a high carb content of 31g per gel and a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio. They have a very neutral flavour and a slightly thick consistency. As the PF 30 does not come with electrolytes the hydration that comes in our packs must be taken on the run.

  • Smaller gel size
  • More neutral flavour
  • Not overly thick texture

SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gel (Lemon & Lime)

SiS gels are the most popular and common gels because they are a great isotonic gel. They can be taken without water as they have a thinner texture. The lemon and lime flavour are the most palatable I found for long marathons as it is not too sickly.

  • No need to take with water
  • Isotonic
  • Thinner texture

OTE Super Gel (Berry)

OTE offer a very efficient amount of carbs at 40g per gel and have a runny texture. The berry flavour is great for someone who wants slightly more taste to their gel. They are very easy on the stomach.

  • Neutral pH
  • Natural flavouring ingredients
  • Added electrolytes

Clif Bloks Energy Chews (Strawberry)

The Clif Bloks alternative is for those who don’t want gels or want a mix of textures while running. They come in a pack that is split into cubes so easy to split while running. They are chewy, firm jelly type texture. From our experience the strawberry flavour offers the most enjoyable taste.

  • Chew texture
  • Pack split into cubes for ease
  • Best alternative texture to gels
